A post-mortem revealed blunt and sharp force injuries to the head and neck.

A woman has gone on trial accused of the murder of her 76-year-old mother.

By reason of insanity, Moire Bergin has pleaded NOT guilty to murdering her mother, Cootehill native Mary Bergin, at the home they shared at First Avenue, Seville Place, Dublin.

When gardai arrived at the scene on the morning of the 13th of April 2022, they found the accused, Moire Bergin, naked and in a highly distressed state. She had a large amount of blood on her legs and hands, and grabbed a garda’s arm before telling her she had killed her mother. Mary Bergin’s body was found in one of the bedrooms; and two knives were found during a search of the house.
