Motorists across Cavan and Monaghan have been encouraged to "keep their tyres in check". The advice comes from the AA in relation to concerning figures released by the Road Safety Authority.
A total of 91 penalty notices were issued for driving with a defective tyre in Co Cavan during the month of December 2022. Meanwhile a total of 40 penalty notices were issued for the same offence during the same period in County Monaghan.
Based on the analysis of Garda forensic road collision road reports the Road Safety Authority estimate that defective tyres could be a contributory factor in as many one in ten fatal crashes annually, resulting in approximately 14 deaths each year.
As a result, Head of Communication at the AA, Paddy Comyn has advised locals to be mindful when driving. "The message is to spend as much money as you can afford on your tyres - don't put it off as a purchase, maintain your tyres properly, make sure that the thread and pressure is correct and be sure to check that every two week," he said. "I think it's vital that motorists pay attention to their tyres. I can't emphasise how important it is."
