Maura Williamson from Carrigallen has praised staff at Cavan General Hospital following an experience with her 25-year-old daughter Lauren who has Down Syndrome back in September. Maura and her daughter had a seven hour wait until they were told to go home and come back. Despite this, Maura had high-praise for staff who she says are completely "burnt out."
Following her experience, the Carrigallen woman wants to raise the flag for young people with additional needs and highlight how stressful long stays in a waiting room can be on them. Maura says healthcare professionals have "no time" to explain what's happening due to services being so understaffed and under-resourced. Despite this, Maura says those few minutes would be "crucial" to a young person with additional needs who are struggling to cope in a stressful environment. Speaking on today's Joe Finnegan Show, Maura says it's down to ordinary people on the ground to speak out about conditions in order to bring about change for healthcare staff and patients.
