The mother of Kelly Marie Lynch whose body was recovered from the Ulster Canal in Monaghan Town is calling for changes to be made in how Gardaí investigate sudden deaths. An online petition which was set up by the 23-year-olds mother, Julieanne, has already garnered over 1,400 signatures. Kelly Marie died on Saturday the 16th of March, however her body was not discovered until March 17th. According to Julieanne, despite "disturbing discrepancies" in the circumstances surrounding her daughter's death, it was deemed as non-suspicious by the Gardaí. A conclusion which she believes "fails" to explain the multitude of injuries her daughter suffered.
In a statement issued online, Julieanne believes the situation calls for "urgent changes" in how the Gardaí investigate sudden deaths to ensure a "comprehensive, all-encompassing process is followed." According to the Co Fermanagh mother, "every potential lead" and "every discrepancy must be probed for no stone should be left unturned in these investigations." Garda Commissioner Drew Harris recently ordered a review into the investigation carried out on Kelly Marie Lynch's death. Previously speaking to Northern Sound, Julieanne said it's a "shame" that it has taken the Garda Commissioner to act in order for the families concerns to be taken seriously.
In a statement posted on the petition which can be located online, Julieanne said; "In the name of justice, we call for an overhaul of the investigation protocols so that families like ours can find solace in the assurance that their loved ones receive the justice they deserve. Let Kelly's tragic end spur this important change. Sign this petition to demand more thorough and rigorous investigations by the Gardaí into sudden deaths."
