The funeral mass has taken place of a mother and son who died as a result of a house fire in Cavan over the weekend. Emergency services attended the fatal blaze which broke out at the family home of Kathleen Lynch and her son Michael in Lackenmore shortly before 2am last Sunday morning.
Hundreds gathered outside of St Josephs Church in Ballyjamesduff this afternoon to pay their respects to the late Kathleen Lynch and her son Michael who were widely known across the local area.
Speaking during this afternoon's joint funeral mass, Parish Priest, Fr Kevin Donohoe paid tribute to the "special bond" both Kathleen and Michael shared, stating that as they "lived they died, together side by side."
He highlighted how "granny's house" in Lackenmore where the tragic blaze broke out was always a special place and a central meeting point for the Lynch family over the years.
Fr Donohoe added that Kathleen enjoyed the "simple things in life" and wasn't afraid of "hard work" while the bonds of family life were a source of "love, interest and pride" for Michael.
Speaking to those in attendance, Fr Donohoe said; "We celebrate the lives of two special people and the special bond that existed between them. We take comfort from the fact that as they lived together, they entered eternal life together.
"In our devastation today, we celebrate the lives of two people who have inspired us with the values that have served our country and our people so well. The values of the bonds of friendship, respect for the elderly, motivation for the young, the care of the needy and the love of animals."
