Diseases of the circulatory system were the biggest causes of death in the Northern Sound region in 2021.
The figures were contained in the latest report from the Central Statistics Office. The latest CSO report looks at the causes of death per electoral area. According to the data, there were 479 deaths registered in Monaghan and 603 in Cavan for the year 2021. Cavan-Belturbet had the highest proportion of deaths in Cavan at 215 while the Monaghan LEA had the highest in Monaghan at 168. Across both counties, diseases of the circulatory system, which include things like heart disease or aneurysms, were the most common causes of death in the region. 167 deaths in Cavan and 142 in Monaghan were chalked up to these. Neoplasms, which include cancerous tumours, and diseases of the respiratory system, like COPD or asthma, were the next most common. This data set is also the first to include numbers on deaths where their cause is listed as COVID, virus identified or virus unidentified.
