Local Fianna Fáil TD Brendan Smith has called for more supports for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) struggling with increased costs. The Cavan-Monaghan TD said energy costs are killing some businesses.
The local TD says small and medium enterprises are under huge pressure due to increased costs, and small hospitality enterprises and small retail businesses are facing particular problems and challenges at present. He also said the exit of Ulster Bank from the banking sector was affecting businesses close to the border.
The Cavan-Monaghan deputy highlighted to the Dail that in this region, Ulster Bank always had a good presence, and since its exit from the Irish market, businesses and individuals have had to change banks. They are not getting the same credit facilities they had with Ulster Bank. Deputy Smith said the Government needs to provide the best possible supports to ensure the viability of such businesses and the retention of employment, particularly in retail and hospitality."
