Members of Monaghan County Council have called for further financial supports to be allocated towards more menopause assistance to women. A motion was tabled by Sinn Fein's Cathy Bennett, Sinead Flynn and Bronagh McAcree at a recent sitting of the local authority where the matter was raised. According to Sinn Fein's Sinead Flynn, calls have been made for Government to make a commitment to include free mid-life health checks for all women between the ages of 45 and 64 in the upcoming Budget. Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr Flynn says there is a "financial strain" on women seeking these medications.
Cllr Flynn added that earlier detections for a wide range of diseases would not only save the state millions but would alleviate the pressures facing GPs and hospitals. "The barriers to accessing this medication need to be taken away," explained Cllr Flynn. "We also need to be doing a lot more to support women's health and also gender-specific health issues."
