More focus is needed on regional development squads for local athletes to become Olympians.
That’s the message from one local coach following the performance of Irish athletes in Tokyo this year.
Brian O’Reilly trains juvenile to senior athletes with Shercock AC and says that many would love to wear the green singlet but in order to do this there needs to be more encouragement on regional club development and ensuring those on the cusp of national teams get the right support.
He says that we should start to look at sports like rowing and boxing where there is a high success rate and see how that can be emulated in athletics:
