The HSE has confirmed this evening that opening hours at the Minor Injuries Unit in Monaghan town are to be extended to weekends. The service says the Unit will open Monday to Sunday from the 8th of July next.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Deputy Matt Carthy highlighted that until very recently, the opening hours in Monaghan were less than those of other minor injury units in the State. He says that since the hours were extended Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm, the Unit has seen a 47% increase in attendance.
Deputy Carthy added that the move has eased pressure on local hospitals and on GP services across Cavan and Monaghan. "What we have seen in recent months has been the extension of opening hours from 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday.
"That has seen an increase in attendance at the MIU by 47% and that shows that what we are saying was actually the case. Now, we have the very welcome development that the Unit will be open on Saturday and Sunday.
"Again that will provide people with the opportunity to attend the MIU where appropriate and save then attending the Doctor on Call or going to Emergency Departments at our hospitals," he said.
