Creative Cafés, an initiative by Monaghan County Council, has been recognised at this year's Age-Friendly Awards. The workshops are run in library branches across County Monaghan.
They are an opportunity for older people and isolated members of our community, who may be feeling socially excluded to engage in creative activities such as ukulele lessons, Sean Nós dancing, Christmas wreath making and bodhrán making and playing.
The activities are proven to help with social anxiety and also serves as a form of relaxation. The cafés also show that libraries are not only for books and reading. Monaghan's cafés won the Age Friendly Community Innovation Award, sponsored by the Department of Rural & Community Development at the eighth annual awards which were emceed by Marty Whelan.
