The National Women's Council (NWC) is holding a march for solidarity and inclusion tomorrow in Dublin. The organisation says the Government must tackle, what it describes as, the growing wave of racist violence facing the country.
The National Women's Council also wants the long-overdue National Action Plan on Racism to be published. Rachel Coyle from Monaghan says it is important to remember that people seeking international protection are fleeing war, persecution and poverty.
But, she added, there are a small few who are spreading disinformation, fake news, and lies which is is often focused on dividing women. The vast majority of people do understand that the people who come here are fleeing violence, persecution, and poverty.
"But unfortunately a small cohort of people spread a lot of disinformation, fake news, and fake videos; they use very emotive language and have legitimate fears around violence against women that is focused on dividing us. NWC believes that this is shameful; we even saw fake leaflets being distributed in Dublin telling women not to leave their homes after 6pm," said Ms Coyle.
