Monaghan Town has ranked second place in a survey of the cleanest towns and cities in Ireland. There's Good news for Cavan, too, which, regains the 'clean' status it lost last year.
40 locations were surveyed with Naas coming out on top. Cavan came in in 23rd place and is described as "clean to European norms" while Monaghan is "cleaner" than European norms. The study reveals an overall improvement in litter levels, and a decrease in cans and plastic bottles on our streets on foot of the Deposit Return Scheme.
Today's IBAL survey also shows Naas is the cleanest town in the country, ahead of Monaghan and Blanchardstown in Dublin. Irish Business Against Litter spokesperson Conor Horgan says it's great to see fewer cans and plastic bottles being dumped: "This is the first survey we've conducted since the Government's deposit return scheme and the early indications are that it's having a real impact," he said, "We've seen a 30 per cent fall in the prevalence of cans on our streets and there's also been a drop in the prevalence of plastic bottles so, it's a real good indicator that the scheme is working."
