Concerns have been raised across the Northern Sound region in recent months over the unavailability of taxies.
Those concerns are not just about night time availability, many listeners have pointed out that there is also a shortage during daylight hours.
Patrick Gillsenan, a taxi operator in Monaghan town, told the Joe Finnegan Show this morning that the industry is in crisis.
He highlighted how years of difficulties around the regulation of the industry have contributed to that crisis.
He also added that it's not that drivers won't work at night, there are plenty of drivers there.
Mr Gillsenan says the problem is, that those drivers are working 50 and 60 hour weeks during the day, and there aren't enough drivers left to work nights.
"The drivers aren't there. I don't have a single driver under 60 years of age.
"That's because over the years anyone that wanted to become a taxi driver, they were prevented from doing so, and they went off and got something else.
So, the drivers that are there have been in the industry for the last 20 years and they are about to retire.
"And the situation is bad now but it's going to get worse. And it will get a lot worse before it gets better," he added.
