There are fears that all the children who need a place in Monaghan's new special needs school will miss out on a place because of paperwork. So far, the National Council for Special Education has received applications for school places for almost 60 children with additional needs in Monaghan. But, only around 15 of those applicants have all the necessary medical and educational reports to support their application.
A new temporary special needs school is set to open its doors in Castleblayney in time for the next academic year in September 2025. With this in mind, local support group, SNAP, are urging parents to give their child the best chance of securing a school place by getting their paperwork in order.
Special Educational Needs Organisers - or SENOs - can help parents process their application and advise them on what reports they have to submit. Chair of SNAP, Paddy McAloon, says getting this stage of the process done is vitally important because the number of children who are fully registered will also influence the capacity of the new special needs school in Monaghan when it 's built:
Contact details for two SENOs are available on the SNAP Facebook page.
