Anyone who wishes to express their solidarity for the people suffering in Gaza, are asked to make their support known at an event in Monaghan this evening. The Palestinian Solidarity event is being hosted by Sinn Féin's spokesperson on foreign affairs, Matt Carthy TD.
It will be attended by three speakers who can give first-hand experience of what is happening to Palestinians on the ground as the conflict with Israel continues into its fourth month. The Palestinian Ambassador to Ireland is joined by Khalid Al Astal whose wife, and mother of his two children, was killed by an Israeli airstrike. Also, speaking at tonight's event in the Four Seasons Hotel in Monaghan will be local woman Áine Treanor who spent three months working as a human rights monitor in the West Bank.
Deputy Carthy urges anyone who has been affected by what they've seen happening in Gaza and wants to show their suffering is not falling on deaf ears to go along. Every gesture, no matter how small, can make a difference, Matt Carthy said: "Whether it's the Irish peace process and ending the conflict in Ireland or, whether it's ending the apartheid regime in South Africa or, bringing an end to any injustices we've seen historically, it starts with a small number of people making small steps so, this evening's event, unfortunately isn't going to, in itself, deliver a ceasefire but, coupled with all those efforts being made by men, women and children all over the world and particularly all across Ireland, I hope it will have an impact."
