Monaghan Senator, Robbie Gallagher, has been appointed Government Chief Whip in Seanad Eireann. His elevation to the role was part of the mid-term change over in leadership which saw Leo Varadkar become Taoiseach and Micheal Martin appointed Minister for Foreign Affairs.
Senator Gallagher says that the Seanad could play a vital role in creating more awareness and a better understanding of EU legislation, and with regard to the various Directives that are required in Member States' domestic law.
The local Senator says he has already succeeded in introducing a valuable piece of law in respect of the Landlord & Tenant Act that has had a positive impact across the Cavan Monaghan region.
He added that Seanad Eireann is an important cog in the wheel of democracy in the Republic of Ireland. "The Seanad does play a very important role and it is an important house. I think two houses are necessary to scrutinise legislation that is coming along and affecting all our citizens.
"Dail Eireann is a busy place and the Seanad affords an opportunity for a shaper eye, if you like, and more scrutiny of legislation that is coming down from the Dail or from Europe either," Senator Gallagher said.
