Meanwhile, Barry Aughey who set up LA5-19 after his son Luke died by suicide in 2019, says that suicide awareness and improving mental health are key to suicide prevention. He highlighted the importance of becoming more aware of the services that are available to those who are struggling.
"One of the things we did when we set up LA5-19 was a website and that contains all the supports that are available - and there are many. When our son Luke was suffering with depression, I only knew of Pieta House and they weren't offering a service in Monaghan, and I didn't know of anything else.
"It was only a month after he died I was advised that SoSad was in the county. There are a lot of services around and people need to become more aware of them," added Barry.
