Monaghan secondary schools buck national university trend

The statistics come from the Irish Independent Feeder Schools project which includes listings for schools in Cavan and Monaghan.

100% of Leaving Cert. students from one school in County Monaghan went on to college in 2024.

Coláiste Oiriall in Monaghan bucked the national trend of of 76 per cent of secondary school students continuing on to university. Last year, the figure was 77 per cent.

The statistics come from the Irish Independent Feeder Schools project which includes listings for schools in Cavan and Monaghan. 86 per cent of the 105 students who sat the Leaving Certificate in St Patrick's College in Cavan went on to college. 82 per cent from St Aidan's Comprehensive School in Cootehill and 80 per cent from the Loreto College in Cavan pursued college education. In Monaghan, 100 per cent of Leaving pupils in St Louis' Secondary School in Carrickmacross went on to college this summer for the second year in a row. It is followed by St Macartan's on 75 per cent, Monaghan Collegiate on 73 and Beechill College with 46 per cent.

According to the Irish Independent, some educators cite the cost of living and housing crises as having a bearing on whether a student opts to go to university or not.
