Ireland has to be prepared for cases of mpox to be recorded here.
That's according to a leading infectious disease specialist, as Sweden's public health agency records the first case of a more dangerous variant of mpox outside Africa. Speaking to Northern Sound, Co Monaghan Professor Sam McConkey says cases of mpox are likely here in Ireland:
The WHO has declared the outbreak of mpox in Africa as a public health emergency of international concern. A previous strain of the virus, which appeared two years ago, mainly affected men. Mr McConkey says every GP and emergency department needs to be prepared to manage a case of mpox walking in the door. The Monaghan native outlines what the symptoms are to detect a case of mpox.
