A local infectious disease specialist says the country is likely at the point where the government can permit the return of indoor dining.
However, Monaghan Professor Sam McConkey added there is "no perfect way" to exit the pandemic and has called for this "next step forward" to be taken with caution.
The Government is likely to decide in the next 24 hours whether indoor dining can reopen next week.
It's thought a return to indoor dining may now be pushed back by two weeks to get more people vaccinated, due to concerns over the Delta variant.
