A Monaghan poultry farmer says farmers are saving the public from returning to hunter-gatherer status.
Nigel Reneghan was responding to Gerry Boland from Animals behind Closed Doors, a group that is anti-industrial farming and advocate for a vegan lifestyle.
The group claims that turkeys are sentient birds who spend most of their lives in sheds and don't want to die.
Mr Reneghan, who runs a large organic poultry farm in Clontibret, argues that meat provides essential vitamins for humans and his birds are well looked after.
Speaking on the Joe Finnegan show this morning, he also says that animals such as turkeys thrive in warm, sheltered conditions such as sheds, and wouldn't have the same survival rate in the wild.
