Bishop Noel Treanor has been appointed Apostolic Nuncio to the EU by Pope Francis and has been raised to the rank of Archbishop. A native of Silverstream in the parish of Tyholland, Bishop Treanor was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Clogher in 1976 and served in both Monaghan and Enniskillen parishes.
He was Secretary-General of the Commission of the Bishops' Conferences of the European Union (COMECE) from 1993 until his appointment as Bishop of Down and Connor in 2008. The Holy See said Bishop Treanor comes into this new role at a critical time for Europe and the world.
Bishop of Clogher, Larry Duffy has offered his congratulations and best wishes to Bishop Treanor on his new appointment. "I congratulate Bishop Noël Treanor on his appointment today by Pope Francis as the new Apostolic Nuncio to the European Union.
"Bishop Noel comes into this new role at a critical time for Europe and the world. He brings to it a great depth of experience and competence, most especially through his involvement with COMECE, as President of Justice and Peace Europe and from his fourteen years as Bishop of Down and Connor.
"As a native son of the parish of Tyholland in this diocese, Bishop Noel brings with him the prayers and good wishes of us all. Through the intercession of St MaCartan, may the Lord continue to guide him in his ministry," added Bishop Duffy.
