A motor mechanic in Monaghan is among the biggest defaulters listed by the Revenue Commissioners in its latest round-up of tax defaulters across the country.
Eamonn Galligan, a mechanic from Drumass, Inniskeen in Co Monaghan owes a total of €1.86m to Revenue.
Mr Galligan was found to have under declared income tax following a Revenue investigation. That included tax of €712,000, interest of €446,000 and penalties of €705,000, Revenue confirmed that none of the money owned has yet been paid to them.
The case was the largest settlement listed on the latest quarterly tax defaulters list covering the period from July to September. Revenue said the 24 settlement cases in the third quarter amounted to a total of €9.6m. Of those, 22 cases exceeded €100,000 and two were for more than €1m.
In the three months to the end of September, there were 23 cases of excise offences for tobacco smuggling, illegal selling of tobacco and possession of untaxed tobacco for sale. There were 20 cases of the misuse of marked mineral oil. They attracted fines totalling €69,000, while in one case a suspended sentence of two years and nine months was imposed.
