Local man Fergal McMahon has been crowed Monaghan's overall 'Volunteer of the Year'. The awards ceremony which was held on Sunday night at the Garage Theatre recognises and celebrates the efforts and achievements of volunteers and voluntary organisations right across the county. Local man Fergal McMahon is the current vice-chairperson of the Solas Drop in Centre based in Monaghan Town. Paying tribute to his work, co-founder of the group Alice O'Neill described Fergal as one someone who is "gentle" and "kind." She also added that Fergal is "considerate, reliable and very intelligent."
Fergal also works with SOSAD, ALONE, his local rotary club and fundraises for Epilepsy Ireland. Speaking to Northern Sound, Fergal said he was absolutely "stunned" when his name was called out on Sunday.
"There were so many fantastic nominees so I was utterly shocked to have won it," explained Fergal. "As far as I'm concerned, I see it as a privilege and an honour to be serving the community of Monaghan through the work that I do across various organisations."
