A Monaghan man who climbed Mt Kilimanjaro to raise funds for mental health services says he feels a great sense of achievement following the endeavour.
Michael McKenna, who was heavily involved in the development of community mental health services locally, climbed the mountain with his son Ciaran and raised close to €20,000 for Solas and Pieta House while he was it.
Both charities have branches in Cavan and Monaghan. Meanwhile, Mr McKenna told Northern Sound that it was the experience of a life time. However, he warned that he will be sticking to lower ground from now on. "I don't think I will be looking for any more altitude places in my life. I think I'll stick to the lower hills from here on out.
"But it was a fantastic thing to have achieved and I'm so glad that I made it to the top and that I'm back in one piece. It's by no means easy, that is for sure," he added.
