"Neutrality gives this country a huge boost all over the world."
That's according to Monaghan native Denis O' Higgins who told this morning's Joe Finnegan Show that he agrees whole-heartedly with comments expressed by President Michael D Higgins in recent days.
According to the Monaghan man, the Irish President must be complemented for at least starting a national conversation on the issue.
In his own view, Denis believes "it's time" to put the neutrality question to the people of Ireland in the forum of a referendum. He added that neutrality gives Ireland a "huge boost" right across the glob.
"I'd love to see a referendum carried out just to find out how many people would agree with my kind of thinking" explained Denis. "I'd like to think a majority would agree and I do think the retention of our neutrality should be put into the constitution.
"Neutrality gives this country a huge boost all over the world. We can broker peace with our neutrality but we can't do it with war-mongering, there's enough countries at that."
