The library building in Monaghan town is to be advertised on the open market.
The proposal was approved this week, despite calls for it to be retained.
The library building on the North Road will be left vacant when the service moves to the nearby Peace Campus.
At the most recent county council meeting it was outlined that the executive was proposing to test the market for potential buyers.
Independent Councillor Paudge Connolly put forward a motion that the building shouldn't be sold, and instead be considered to be repurposed by the local authority, instead of paying rent on other buildings in the town.
Fine Gael's David Maxwell was in favour of placing the building on the market, saying the council should explore all options.
He added that it would take an estimated €1 million to bring the building to a suitable standard, and asked that with the Peace Campus being constructed nearby should the museum building also be retained when it's made vacant.
It was clarified at the meeting that placing the building on the open market didn't mean it would be sold, but rather they'd seek interest of suitable offers.
Should suitable offers be accepted, the money would go towards the new library being developed.
Councillor Connolly's motion was defeated by a vote of members, and it was agreed it be placed on the market as suggested.
