Monaghan Hospital last week was awarded the "Age Friendly" status by Age Friendly Ireland, recognising the hospital's commitment to improving accessibility, comfort, and inclusivity, particularly for older adults and people with disabilities.
It was awarded to the local hospital by Age Friendly Ireland, the organisation charged with delivering the government's vision of an Age Friendly Ireland.
Monaghan has proudly been an Age Friendly County for over a decade after Monaghan County Council signed up to the programme in 2011.
Several key physical improvements have been made, including: Installation of Age Friendly parking spaces closer to the entrance, renovated toilet facilities, universal design-compliant seating with armrests and backrests in public areas.
Enhanced visual contrast on curbs for better accessibility, a biodiversity sensory garden and murals in ward areas, increased awareness of Local Link transport and age friendly communications training for staff.
Lynda McGrory, Corporate Business Manager & Site Manager at Monaghan Hospital says this work has led to huge improvements at the hospital for older people.
