A concerned delegation from Monaghan was in Leinster House this morning for a meeting about the N2 / A5 road. The county's roads engineer, a member of the N2/A5 steering committee, Cllr Paudge Connolly, and Senator Robbie Gallagher met with Transport Minister, Eamon Ryan at government buildings this morning.
A delegation from the North pushing for upgrades to the A5, which has claimed the lives of 56 people since 2006, were also in attendance. In February, Leo Varadkar's government pledged €600m to upgrade the A5 road in the north from the border to Donegal and to advance work on the related N2 which runs through Monaghan. Work is yet to begin on either stretch of road.
Cllr Connolly said he also raised the general poor state of Monaghan roads with the Minister for Transport: "I was at a a meeting today in Leinster House with Minister Ryan, " Cllr Connolly told Northern Sound, "the A5 / N2 cross-border committee met with the Minister with the intention of asking him to put pressure on the British Government to get this scheme started. From my perspective, I wanted more attention given to the N2 Clontibret to the border and Castleblayney to Ardee section of that road and to put pressure on to get work starting on it to ensure proper funding is given."
