A Monaghan GP has quashed rumours that she intends to contest the next general election in the Cavan-Monaghan constituency.
Dr Ilona Duffy's comments come following the announcement that current Galway based GP, Dr Martin Daly, announced his intention to contest the upcoming election for Fianna Fáil. He will seek the party's nomination for Roscommon-Galway against current senator, Eugene Murphy. Speaking on this morning's Joe Finnegan show, Dr Ilona Duffy says, unlike her colleague in Galway, she definitely will NOT be contesting the upcoming election. She says she's happy in her current role as a GP.
"Our TDs and our political representatives, it's easy to bash them. They put their head above the parapet, they stand up and they say things and are knocked, knocked, and knocked. Really, I think, I'm probably a little bit selfish. There was a time where I may have considered it but I think it's such a hard life and I love where I am and I love my general practice. That's where I want to stay. So, definitely not in the near future".
