A local doctor who contracted COVID in recent days is encouraging people to be cautious.
According to Monaghan GP, Dr Ilona Duffy, the number of COVID infections is on the rise and the disease hasn't gone away. The local doctor says she suffered from headaches, muscle pain, and nasal congestion. The current government advice for anyone testing positive for COVID is to isolate for 5 days at home.
Speaking on the Joe Finnegan show, Dr Duffy says while it's no longer a requirement to test if you have symptoms, it might help to protect someone vulnerable, especially when attending events.
"We're not talking about testing, public health aren't encouraging us to test that much but I think if you are going to an event, and we've talked about this before, weddings are the big thing at the moment where people think "maybe test yourself before you go". I'm not trying to be dramatic and there will be people saying "oh here we go again", that's not what it's about. It's about saying, if you get COVID you are having to isolate for a minimum of 5 days so that means you're away from work for 5 days and for us in the healthcare setting, that's a big deal because it means we're down doctors, which means we're down in the service. But also, for those who are vulnerable and who are likely to get more severe illness, it is a big deal for them".
