Local heritage has survived because people talked to each other.
That's according to Monaghan's Heritage Officer, Shirley Clerkin who has been speaking about the jam-packed line up of events that are taking place across the county to mark National Heritage Week.
This year's theme focuses on sustainability and biodiversity and Shirley says there is something for everyone to enjoy.
Monaghan's heritage officer also highlighted how the week provides people with the opportunity to appreciate more the environment in which they live.
She also pointed to the inspiration that can be garnered from becoming more aware of the heritage of the locality.
"Heritage Week is about inspiring and celebrating our heritage, and getting to know more about it," added Shirley.
"But also to think about joining a local heritage group or become involved in an environmental NGO.
"There are loads of opportunity there now for people who have time to really become involved in their heritage."
