Ground disturbance at the Peace Campus site in Monaghan town left local Gardaí with a €1,000 pest control bill.
Emails released to Northern Sound News under the Freedom of Information Act show that last summer, Gardaí in Monaghan town reported sightings of rats on the grounds of the station.
At the end of July last year, the then Chief Superintendent John O'Reilly was informed by the Monaghan District Office of an "influx of rodents" in the Plantation Road area.
This was said to be caused by the disturbance of grounds relating to works at the Monaghan Peace Campus Site that neighbours the Garda Station.
Garda staff reported rats on the external station site, and feared they could make their way into the station or Garda vehicles.
Rentokil provided two options of dealing with the issue, with the Garda Estate Management team recommending a pest control contract that would provide for a number of call-outs to prevent the issue reoccurring from the continued works.
This totalled €1,094.70 for a contract for the calendar year - starting in August 2020.
With the issue flagged as urgent, approval was given and order made just three and a half hours after the initial email to the Chief Superintendent.
Emails also show that Monaghan County Council was informed of the rats, with Gardaí saying the local authority was taking action in public areas.
Monaghan County Council has been contacted for details on what actions were carried out.
