The bravery of two local fire fighters was recently honoured at a civic reception held in the Monaghan Peace Campus. Firefighters Stephen Smith and Gerry Ward from Castleblayney Fire Service were both recognised for their efforts during a rescue operation.
The incident involved the rescue of a lady from the River Fane which was flooded at the time. The rescue was hampered with difficult terrain, poor visibility and the proximity of the casualty. Despite this, with the aid of the Coast Guard lighting and the sound of a whistle, Stephen and Gerry were able to locate the causality.
