Monaghan disappoints in the most recent nationwide litter survey, while Cavan retains its 'clean' status.
Business group Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) has carried its first survey since the Covid-19 crisis and it has shown a dramatic fall in the number of towns and cities deemed to be 'clean', to its lowest level since 2007.
This IBAL survey shows that Monaghan is losing its 'Clean' status coming in at 25th spot in the ranking of 40 towns and cities nationwide, while Cavan remains 'Clean' in 23rd.
The survey showed PPE litter to be widespread and a rise in the prevalence of cans and glass bottles.
In Monaghan it was noted that The Diamond continues to look very well with all aspects of the area surveyed in very good order and excellent with regard to litter.
However, 'The Diamond Centre' was a very heavily littered site, with An Taisce stating that - 'this has been the case for a long number of years.'
There was little change at the Recycle Facility at New Road which continues to present very poorly with items stuffed between, beneath and behind the recycle units meaning that Monaghan is now deemed to be 'Moderately littered'.
Meanwhile Cavan was deemed to be 'Clean to European norms' however, it was noted that nationally it still ranks in the middle.
The Recycle Facility at Tesco Car Park was said to be much improved and it seemed great care has been taken with the overall presentation.
Top ranking sites in the town included Bridge Street and the residential area of Ashgrove.
The town was let down by one very poor site, an abandoned building at the corner of R212 and Ballinagh Road, with An Taisce stating it wasn't just casually littered but subject to dumping over a prolonged period of time.
