A 165-acre Monaghan dairy farm has been put on the market for €2m. The non-residential farm which is close to the N2 crossing the border with Louth at Annahean, Carrickamcross has a 10-unit milking parlour, 6,00 litre tank and 30-pen calf shed. The business also comes with a Single Farm Payment of around €17,000 and a Farm Assist Payment of €3,200
It has been reported as "one of the largest to come up for sale in the county in some time". Chairperson of the Cavan branch of the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association, Gerry O'Reilly, said a farm such as the one at Carrickmacross should do well at auction. However, he also said its sale could be a sign of things to come for the dairy industry in Cavan and Monaghan:
"Given where the costs have gone, costs have gone completely out of reach," Mr O'Reilly told Northern Sound, "and the reality is the margin for dairy farmers is non-existent at the moment so, it's certainly not surprising to see a farm of that size going up for sale. And, yeah," he continued, "in that part of the country I would imagine there will be some people who would be well able and prepared to have a good go at it. There is a big demand for land so yeah, I'd expect it to sell reasonably quickly."
