Locals have been advised to be "aware" of algal blooms. The toxic bacteria may appear as a green scum in local lakes during this time of year. The risk can be even higher particularly during calm and warm weather. In a statement issued to the public, Monaghan County Council has warned members of the public to be aware of algal blooms. According to the local authority, locals must avoid any contact with algal blooms as they are an irritant and can be toxic if ingested.
During calm weather, the algae can rise to the surface to form a Scum. Although an Algal Bloom/Scum is not always harmful, contact with the affected water can cause illness such as skin rashes, eye irritation , vomiting and diarrhoea. Members of the public are also advised to keep dogs away from any affected
shorelines as they are particularly sensitive to these blooms, which often present as a coloured scum on the surface of water.
