Monaghan County Council has spent €5,000 clearing 19 tonne of tyres that were dumped in north Monaghan forestry.
The tyres were left on private land two weeks ago and discovered on May 18th, on privately owned forestry at Drumfurrer, north of Carrickroe.
It was originally estimated that between 400 and 600 tyres were dumped, and it would cost €2,000 to clear the site; however, Northern Sound News understands it took three loads to remove what ended up being 19 tonne of tyres, with a final bill totalling €5,000.
Monaghan County Council's Environmental Section had been liasing with the landowner to investigate the source of the dumping, and measures have since been taken to ensure there is no repeat incidents at that location.
The tyres were discovered exactly one week after more than 20 sheep and lamb carcasses were found near Poll an Aifrinn in Bragan, 5 kilometres as the crow flies from Drumfurrer.
Monaghan County Council spent over €1,500 clearing that site.
