Monaghan County Council is appealing to farmers to take responsibility for their livestock following the dumping of a dead calf beside Sreenty Lake, near Shantonagh.
The calf had been dead for a number of days when it was discovered - dead animals can be a source of disease and contamination, particularly where discharges from the carcass can contaminate water.
This is just one of 20 complaints relating to the dumping of dead animals this spring, with many of the incidents occurring close to the border with Northern Ireland.
Brendan Smith, the County Veterinary Officer, is reminding farmers that they must take responsibility for their dead livestock and ensure they are collected by registered dead animal collectors as quickly as possible:
