Monaghan councillors have welcomed a measure that will see the names of new housing estates written in both English and Irish.
All proposed estate names will reflect its area and signage will prioritise Irish, with its English translation underneath.
The Irish place names should also be easily pronounced by non-Irish speakers and not be complicated.
Councillor Aoife McCooey noted that there are people in Monaghan with no Irish.
She said it was important they don't feel alienated and added that they need to be able to "easily pass on their address to emergency services".
Elsewhere, PJ O'Hanlon said he had "very serious concerns" over this issue and that it was "lunacy that some estates are only in Irish".
Current housing estates will not be renamed, and this change will apply to new estates.
