Monaghan councillors are calling for an 'overdue rise' to their annual salary in line with the 2% increase across the public services sector.
The issues was raised at the October meeting of Monaghan County Council with some members calling for adequate remuneration for their work.
The increase would see local representatives pay increase by 95 cent a day, or 347 euro a year.
There was some disagreement over the proposal with independent councillor Seamus Treanor questioning whether a raise at this time was appropriate given the increase of property tax recently.
However, councillor Seamus Coyle who brought up the issue told Shannonside Northern Sound that the work local representatives do needs to be respected and properly remunerated:
