Monaghan Councillors have again called for legislation to allow SIPO penalise office holders found to be in breach of regulations.
It comes after Monaghan Councillor Hugh McElvaney was earlier this year found to have breached four sections of the Local Government Act by offering assistance in return for financial reward.
It followed an undercover television investigation. Councillor McElvaney has denied the claims.
Council members were this week informed that Minister Eoghan Murphy, to whom they had previously written in relation to the issue, was not responsible for the functions of the Standards in Public Office Commission.
They were referred to the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform.
However, Sinn Fein's Brian McKenna said that given the possible changes to Government in coming weeks this request should be sent to the incoming Minister.
Speaking to Northern Sound Councillor McKenna said that while councillors may not necessarily have wanted to take action against the councillor McElvaney, it shouldn't be left to local representatives to deal with.
He wants to see the same procedures used for every one else in the country applied to councillors and not leave the responsibility to the local authority personnel who have no power.
