Monaghan councillors have been advised the speed limit on the N2 between Monaghan and Emyvale should remain at 80km/h.
The issue was raised at the October meeting of Monaghan County Council, with members questioning why there was a reduction considering the improved condition of the road following works.
The Chief Executive stated the road had been designed to an 85 km limit and over riding the decision would require consultation with the Gardaí and the RSA, and leave councillors liable in the case of any accidents.
Sinn Féin's Brian Mckenna also highlighted dissatisfaction in the community in relation to the speed vans on the road, which he says are there to make money not for safety.
However, it was confirmed that this is out of the council's jurisdiction.
