A Monaghan Councillor is set to call time on his career next month after 50 years of being a local representative in the county.

Hugh McElvaney has decided not to contest the upcoming local elections after a five decade career in local politics.

Following a failed bid in the General election in 1982, Mr McElvaney decided to establish himself as a Fine Gael stalwart in Monaghan. He has four times been the Mayor of Monaghan and has been elected to Monaghan County Council on 10 occasions.

He stood for Fine Gael in the 1999 Monaghan County Council election, topping the poll in the Clones Electoral Area, followed again by topping the poll for Fine Gael in the 2004 Monaghan County Council election, notably finishing ahead of party colleague Heather Humphreys. McElvaney was elected for Fine Gael in the new Ballybay-Clones Electoral Area at the 2014 Monaghan County Council election.

The local councillor ran as an independent last time round in 2019, and he says he has really enjoyed serving the people of Monaghan fore 50 years. The Monaghan Council meeting that is planned for June 4th will be the last time that Cllr McElvanney will attend the chamber ahead of his retirement.
