A Monaghan councillor has been informed that the HSE can waive "excessive fees" if engagement is made with the hospital.
Councillor Connolly recently passed a motion calling on the Department of Health to end the practice of pursuing cancer patients with private debt collection agencies.
Where charges are not paid within 47 days, the patient may be pursued by a debt collection agency under HSE policy.
In response to the motion, the HSE sent a statement to the county council outlining that that those "unable to pay within the timeframe should contact the finance department at the hospital".
The statement added that in "some cases of excessive hardship, hospitals can waive inpatient charges or agree payment plans".
However, there is no national police in place on this.
