A Monaghan councillor is calling on "all relevant agencies" to immediately investigate and prosecute scam calls.
There's been an increase in fraudulent activity and Seamus Coyle says scam calls are "frightening" for many, particularly the elderly.
His motion asks for the Communications Minister, Eamon Ryan, ComReg, the Garda Commissioner, and others "to come together" to devise an "imaginative approach" to overcome this issue.
It comes as Cavan gardaí say they've received two reports of account take-over fraud in recent days.
It's a form of identity theft where the scammer gains access to an account and makes changes such as authorising a new user or changing a password.
Councillor Coyle says while such scams are difficult to prosecute, the problem can be solved by the relevant authorities working together:
