A funding allocation of €750,000 will go towards Monaghan County Council's improvement of local roads. At this month's council meeting, it was confirmed that the funding will go towards the future development of a pilot initiative that uses reclaimed asphalt, which according to Cathaoirleach Sean Conlon, could be used as a "national template" for the repair of roads.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Cllr Conlon revealed that the initiative is an "excellent example" of how within the council organisation, they had the skills set to engage in creative and innovative thinking. Speaking in relation to the work of local engineering staff; "It’s a badge of honour for the authority and it's not for the first instance.
"We have sections within our local authority who have come up with pilot schemes and very innovative approaches in doing our business, these approaches result in saving money and reducing the negative impact on our environment and this particular one is a stellar example.
“This initiative is centred on local road surfaces and improving our roads, but the pilot specifically is also centred around a lower energy approach and reducing our carbon footprint."
