Monaghan County Council recently launched its Road Safety Action Plan for 2023 and 2024.
Based on the principles of the 'Safe System Approach' the plan places an emphasis on the shared responsibility amongst those who design, build, manage and use the roads and vehicles to prevent collision impacts and those who provide post-crash response to reduce injury.
The launch is also in partnership with An Garda Siochana, the Road Safety Authority, the National Ambulance Service and the TII. Speaking to Northern Sound, Cathaoirleach of Monaghan County Council, Sean Conlon says it's important for people when they get behind the wheel of any vehicle to "always adapt" to the precautionary principles.
He added that the safety plan is "more than just book on a shelf" as it outlines the consequences that can occur if motorists don't abide by the rules of the road:
"It's all about the serious, negative, and tragic consequences when people don't apply them. We talk about that 'precautionary principle' when we take to the roads and the trauma that can occur when recklessness is involved in driving and also the consequences resulting from an accident , maybe somebody behind the wheel, a pedestrian walking the road or a cyclist".
