The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is calling for local authorities to ramp up the amount of inspections they carry out on farms. A new report shows that Monaghan County Council is one of the best performers nationally when it comes to carrying out the task.
Ireland's water quality continues to deteriorate, according to the EPA's latest report on the environmental performance of local authorities in 2021. It examined governance, waste, water, air and noise, with agricultural waste the main contributor to water pollution.
The report shows Offaly, Mayo and Sligo were among the worst performers. Programme Manager at the EPA's Office of Environmental Enforcement, David Pollard says other local authorities are more vigilant.
"No local authority performed excellently in everything; and no local authority performed really poorly in everything. But having said that, the top five performers are Dublin City Council, Monaghan, Leitrim, Fingal County Council and Kildare.
"The report is online and people can look that up and see how their own local authority performed," he added.
